Player Off-Field Guidelines

Transportation

Some of the players coming this summer will not have a car. The host families are not responsible for driving the players to the field or their jobs. Players with vehicles are strategically placed so that they may carpool to and from the gym, job, or field.

Meals

It is the responsibility of the host family to make their kitchen available to the players so they can prepare meals. Families are not required to cook for players (we prefer they do), but we ask that food is available for them to heat up or cook themselves.

From experience we have found it helpful to get a list of foods that players like to eat so that they can be comfortable. Most of the players do not eat cold salads or anything green and if they do they are the minority not the majority!

HCBL gives the families a night off by providing pizza or sandwiches for the players after an away game. Experience has taught us that even though this meal is provided, players may still be hungry when they arrive home after the game.

We encourage host families to get together with other families for a barbecue or dinner after a game. HCBL insists that families do not provide alcohol to the players.

Uniforms & Laundry

The players must have access to the washer and dryer. They are given only one uniform (pair of pants, one jersey, hat, belt, and socks) because they play baseball 6 days a week, and they usually need to do their laundry every day or every other day.

Host families should show the player how to use their washer and dryer. Some families will choose to do the player’s laundry so that he is not doing laundry late at night or washing only 2 items at a time.

Sleep overs and Guests

Players are not allowed to have another player on the team sleep over under any circumstances without prior permission from the team General Manager.

It is important that players respect their host families rules. They should not bring home one of their teammates or friends without prior permission from the host families. Host should be sensitive to other families trying to bond with their player. Host families should check with the other family before you invite your player’s teammate for dinner or out on the off day.

We request that families only house their player but the decision is ultimately theirs. The players all talk to one another and it can make it difficult for other host families if they do not have the space in their home to take in a player’s girlfriend or family. We can provide a list of local B&B and motels.

Jobs

Players are encouraged to work a part time job in the community, it is not required. Host families are not responsible for transporting their player to and from work. Some of the jobs this summer will be at one of our clinics or performing field maintenance.

Community Service

All players are required to perform community service during their stay. .

Curfew

The players have a curfew, weeknights Midnight, weekends 1:00 am. Exceptions will be made for team gatherings under the supervision of a Host Family or the coaches. This must be approved by the General Manager prior to the gathering.

If a player is not coming in at or around curfew we need to know about it. It is disrespectful to the host family and nothing good happens after midnight. Communication between team officials and host families is very important so that issues can be addressed quickly.

Health Club

Some teams provide players access to one of several fitness centers in the area. Most players work out daily, usually in the mornings before they are due at the field. Players should try to work out in small groups to avoid over-crowding the fitness centers.
